Dear Friends,

On 6 May this year, one of the world's most dynamic contributors to the common good of humanity, Ted Turner, died. May we be reminded of the enormous good one person can do. May that remembrance inspire each of us to work diligently for a safer, saner world.

The Global Security Institute honored Ted Turner with the Alan Cranston Peace Award with an extraordinary event at the United Nations in 2005.

Outstanding speakers included Mark Malloch Brown, Chef de Cabinet to the UN Secretary-General, former Prime Minister of Canada, Rt. Hon. Kim Campbell*, GSI Chairman Kim Cranston*, Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE,** the awardee and a spectacular performance by the Songs of Solomon Choir.

During his life, President Mikhail Gorbachev** spoke only twice at the UN, once on December 7, 1988, when he publicly set in motion steps to peacefully end the Cold War. For the second time, he flew from Moscow to New York to honor his friend Ted Turner and give his second and final speech at the UN.

Given the magnitude of Ted Turner's service to us all, it was appropriate that President Gorbachev presented the award to Mr. Turner.
